Plan to extend Whalan Lodge

Whalan Lodge Trust is appealing to the Upper Waitaki district organisations for funds to help it extend the Whalan Lodge home for the elderly in Kurow.

The trust wants to enlarge the former Kurow Maternity Hospital's living area.

It hopes to start work early next year, but before it can do so, it needs to raise funds towards the cost of the project, estimated at about $100,000.

The trust already has about $50,000 and is applying for assistance from charitable trusts so it can expand the sitting room by about 80sq m.

The trust will launch an appeal shortly for funds to help it provide a larger, more comfortable living space, allowing more privacy for visitors calling on the home's 13 residents, all of who have lived in the upper Waitaki area.

The trust says the extensions will retain the integrity and character of the home on Diggers Gully Rd.
