More than 100 competitors are expected to trip the light fantastic later this month when the Oamaru Performing Arts Society hosts its annual festival.

Society vice-president Rosemary Zwies said entries for the 76th annual festival were slightly down on last year, and 130 competitors ''from Auckland to Bluff'' would take part during the two-day festival on April 20 and 21.

The festival, which will take place at the Oamaru Opera House, would include a range of performing arts including ballet, tap and Highland dancing, as well as instrumental music, Mrs Zwies said.

A nominee class for the Invercargill Licensing Trust Young Performer award would also be held at the festival, which could give local performers the chance to perform on a national stage, she said.

''We have competitors in that for Highland and national dancing and modern dance. If they get high enough marks they go on to the National Young Performer in October, which is in Invercargill.''
