More than 120 people packed the Orwell Street Church in Oamaru yesterday for what was one of its biggest community Christmas Day dinners.

Head chef Amanda Acheson said organisers had expected about 100 people, but received a lot of last-minute bookings for the annual event.

A team of about 20 volunteers started preparing for the meal on Christmas Eve.‘‘A lot of families come along to help, which is lovely,'' Mrs Acheson said.

Preparing potatoes for 120 people would usually require a big team peeling effort, but this year, a water-blaster did the trick.

The event was run by the community, for the community - ‘‘that's what it's all about''.

‘‘It's great to share the day with the community,'' she said.

‘‘It's good to do something for others.''

Those in attendance ranged from those who could not afford Christmas to people who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone, and travellers.

‘‘There are lots of different stories of why people are here,'' she said.

Donations of food from the community had been overwhelming, Mrs Acheson said.

She praised Sally-Ann Donnelly, The Galleon Family Complex, Alliance Pukeuri, Maxwell's Kitchen and Catering and all the members of the community who either gave food or helped on the day.
