Missing in action - one very large bicycle.

A penny-farthing cycle has been reported stolen from McCarthy's Coal building in Oamaru's historic precinct between October and November last year.

Its owner, Ken Mitchell, thought somebody had borrowed it and hoped it would have been returned by now. The theft of the cycle has now been reported to police.

Senior Constable Bruce Dow, who is also a member of the Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club, said the penny-farthing community was relatively small and the cycle would be noticed, if it suddenly appeared.

The cycle, which was made by Martyns Cycles, was worth about $4000 and had a replacement value of about $7000.

Anyone with information about the theft should contact Oamaru police.

Penny-farthing enthusiasts are preparing for the 16th national penny farthing and veteran cycle championships in Oamaru on November 20.
