Police are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian died and several people were taken to hospital following a crash in Oamaru.

Fire, police and multiple ambulances attended the crash at the Eden St and Thames St intersection at 11.30am today.

Police said tonight initial inquiries showed that a vehicle drove onto the southern footpath, hitting three pedestrians, before continuing back onto Thames St, where it was struck by two vehicles.

A 67-year-old man on the street died at the scene.

A 70-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries and was transported to Dunedin Hospital, while a 13-year-old girl was treated for injuries at  Oamaru Hospital.

All three drivers involved in the crash were taken to Oamaru Hospital for treatment.

A number of businesses, restaurants, shops and accommodation premises were located on the busy street. A staff member at the Oamaru Telegram business described the moment of the crash.

Sarah Baker said: "I was just on my computer here at work and I just heard a bunch of screeching and a bunch of bangs. I looked out and saw people getting out of their cars, running to the blue car."

Police said they would like to thank members of the public who came to assist the injured people.

A serious crash investigation is under way.
