Experienced Palmerston dog triallist Lloyd Smithfinished third in the short head and yard at the South Island championships at Hakataramea yesterday.
Mr Smith and Happy scored 187 points, just two points behind the winner, Selwyn Dorward, of Hastings, and Max.
He was also second in the straight hunt final, with Ernie, on Thursday.
Another Otago triallist, Barry Hobbs (Outram), and Cam, were seventh in the final of the long head. That event was won by Kerry Kilmister, of Tinui, with Floyd.
The five-day championships attracted about 250 competitors from throughout New Zealand.
The North Island and New Zealand dog trial championships will be held in Masterton, starting on June 6.
