Meeting a well-known playwright in a house where a famous author grew up provided inspiration for a group of secondary school pupils in Oamaru on Saturday.

In author Janet Frame's house in Oamaru were playwright Roger Hall (right) and secondary school pupils (from left) Katie-Jane Smithers (15), Genevieve Scanlan (17) and Charlotte Johns (16), who were attending the Oamaru writers' workshop.

About 25 people attended the workshop featuring Roger Hall at Janet Frame's house in Oamaru, organised by the Janet Frame Eden Street Trust. They had lunch at the author's home after a session at Waitaki Girls High School conducted by author and poet Owen Jones.

Trust board member Gordon Scott outlined the history and features of the Eden St house during lunch.

Mr Hall ran the afternoon session, which was followed by an evening at Waitaki Boys' High School where he outlined his ‘‘Fifteen Years to be an Overnight Success'', with Mr Jones doing readings.

Yesterday morning, Oamaru historian Helen Stead led a tour of Oamaru sights that Janet Frame wove into her books.
