An Oamaru rest-home worker has been remembered as "one of a kind".

Frances Paula Rangi, 75, of Oamaru, died after being hit by a car on State Highway 1, between Fernbrook and Redcastle Rds, on Sunday.

The much-loved Iona Enliven rest-home and hospital supervisor’s death shocked and saddened the Waitaki community.

Mrs Rangi was remembered by staff as steadfast and devoted.

Iona Enliven care home manager Steph Leith said Mrs Rangi had been a "loyal employee" of almost 30 years and was dedicated to the patients and staff, and outperformed in her role.

"Francie was a real gem ... One of a kind.

"She loved her job, and went above and beyond. Friendly, caring and hard-working."

She was the laundry supervisor and was a fierce advocate for residents and staff alike, Ms Leith said.

"[She had] amazing energy, full of life and fun. Her passion never waned despite her 75-plus years of age.

"She will be remembered for so much and so sadly missed by everyone whose life she touched, especially her work friends and colleagues, past and present."

Presbyterian Support Otago chief executive Jo O’Neill said Mrs Rangi was a highly respected member of the team.

Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher said "we are all saddened by the sudden and unfortunate passing of Frances Rangi".

"She was an important part of the team at the Iona home, and her 30 years of dedicated service in caring for others meant she was beloved by those she cared for, and the families of those she cared for.

"We offer our heartfelt condolences to her whanau, friends and colleagues at this difficult time."

There has been an outpouring of community support online.

An old school friend posted a tribute: "[I] went to school with Francie, shocked to hear the sad news, we will remember the good times. RIP."

One person posted "sad to hear, she was a lovely lady".

Another wrote "a great loss to her family, friends and the community".

Police in Oamaru said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash, which occurred about 5.55pm, were ongoing, and called for witnesses.

Detective Kevin Kirkman, of Oamaru, confirmed the fatal crash occurred near Iona home and the Galleon Family Complex.

"We would like to hear if anyone saw anything or recorded it, or has dashcam footage.

"It’s an ongoing investigation to establish exactly what happened."
