Oamaru driver charged after hitting bank

A 22-year-old man is facing a charge of dangerous driving after ploughing his car into a bank in Oamaru.

The Oamaru man drove his 2002 Holden Commodore into the bank at the intersection of Derwent and Reed streets just after 1am today, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor and police were awaiting results of an evidential blood test.

The man was charged with dangerous driving, but other charges were possible, Snr Sgt Benn said.

He was not hurt in the crash and is to appear in the Oamaru District Court this week.
