Nine months' jail for disqualified driving

There was no option but to impose imprisonment on a young man who appeared for sentence in the Oamaru District Court yesterday on his 10th conviction for driving while disqualified, Judge John Macdonald said.

Ryan Warren Geary-Smart (20) had earlier admitted driving while disqualified and drink-driving (146mg) on Holmes St on April 11.

Prison had not deterred Geary-Smart.

Home detention had been tried but it had not brought about any lasting change in him either, Judge Macdonald said.

On the disqualified-driving charge, Geary-Smart was jailed for nine months and disqualified for one year and one day.

For drink-driving, he was jailed for one month (cumulative), disqualified for six months and ordered to pay medical and analyst fees of $348.88.
