New public toilets at Kurow, opened in January, are proving such a hit they will be used as a model elsewhere in the Waitaki district and possibly Waimate.
The toilets, which cost about $175,000, were designed by Oamaru company Bruce Parker Architecture. They were built in Kurow to replace old toilets in Hydro Place.
The Waitaki District Council's urban parks officer, Jan-Maree Atkinson, said the Kurow toilets were well utilised and had received favourable comments.
Vandalism had been minimal, ranging from scratched paint to door damage and a drain grate being stolen.
They were built after the council had reviewed the state of its public toilets throughout the district. A programme of replacement and upgrading was put in place and new toilets have been built in Oamaru.
However, the Kurow facility was the first using the new design, with a panel of stone cladding reflecting the local environment.
