Mr Hailes, who is the Alliance Group's Pukeuri plant manager, and Derek Atkinson were recently appointed directors of the North Otago electricity network company by the Waitaki Power Trust.
Mr Hailes has been appointed Alliance Group's general manager commercial and will start work in January in the new position.
The Waitaki Power Trust had to discuss the effect his new job might have on his position as a director.
Yesterday, trust chairwoman Helen Brookes said it was the resolution of the majority of trustees that he remain a director until such time as he resigned, and that the position was then to remain vacant.
Trustees understood Mr Hailes intended resigning from the Network Waitaki board at the end of December.
