Riki Wills, of Banks Building, works on a mystery installation yesterday at Oamaru's waterfront that is already getting a reaction.
Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said he knew what it was, but would not reveal what was concealed under the wrapping, which is covering what appears to be a large frame.
He would say it was an "interactive art work'' that would provide "another point of interest'' at Friendly Bay and was "something I am very confident people will enjoy''.
A deck was being built behind the frame, on the waterfront side, and the unveiling would probably be next week.
Not everyone was happy with the work yesterday.
One woman came into the Otago Daily Times' Oamaru office in Thames St to register her dissatisfaction, while another wrote on Facebook: "Another thing to block the view as [you're] sitting in [your] car eating lunch with a sleeping baby in the back?''
Mr Kircher called for patience.
"It will become more obvious to people once its unveiled - just have a bit of patience on that.''
