A 21-year-old Central Otago man has been charged with a number of driving offences following a high-speed single vehicle crash on State Highway 8 near Omarama on Thursday night.
Sergeant Wayne Brew, of Oamaru, said the man lost control of his vehicle at about 6.15pm while travelling at speeds of more than 150kmh.
Constable Nayland Smith, of Omarama, said the car had spun, left the road and hit the Omarama welcome sign, snapping the post in two.
The man did not receive medical attention, but had a sore back, Const Smith said.
He was charged with driving while disqualified, supplying false details, dangerous driving and drink-driving after recording a breath-alcohol level of 529mcg.
He will appear in the Oamaru District Court on Wednesday, November 23.
