Work is under way to create a new campsite for motorhomes in Palmerston.
Palmerston and Waihemo A&P Association president Paul Mutch asked the Waitaki District Council, during its recent annual plan consultation meeting at Palmerston, for funding to develop an area for self-contained motorhomes at the association's Gilligan St grounds.
Mr Mutch said the grounds were small and traditionally used only about nine days a year for events.
The need to diversify revenue was behind the submission
``rather than putting our hands out for money all the time.''
Three types of units were planned for the 12 spaces: parking, parking with power, and parking with an effluent dropping station, he said.
If all sites were parking only, the cost was estimated at $10,000 not including GST. If all sites were powered that climbed to $18000, plus resource consents and planning up to $4000.
``We are excited about it. It's part of our ongoing plan of better utilisation of the grounds and serving our community,'' Mr Mutch said.
