Pilots trying to avoid paying landing fees at Oamaru Airport are still being caught out by a security camera the Waitaki District Council installed in January.
In April and May, the camera caught 20 landings by light aircraft for which fees were not paid, costing the pilots 200% more than if they had paid honestly.
Sixteen unpaid landings were caught on the camera in the first three months it was in place.
Property manager Dougall McIntyre said the planes captured on camera in April and May had been identified and owners invoiced the $10 landing fee, and a $20 administration fee.
Landing fees are supposed to be paid by an honesty system into a collection box at the terminal.
The camera records landings, feeding pictures to a computer. david.bruce@odt.co.nz
