Money to enforce bylaw

Money has been put aside by the Waitaki District Council to enforce a bylaw banning freedom camping in some areas.

The bylaw is designed to cope with an influx of Rugby World Cup visitors later this year.

The council has delayed adopting its environmental nuisance and freedom camping control bylaw until the Government passes a new law addressing the same issue, expected to be done by August.

However, it has decided to include $25,000 in its budget for next year to enforce the bylaw once it is passed.

Council staff recommended including the extra expenditure in the 2011-12 draft annual plan.

Rural councillors wanted to ensure problem areas such as the Waitaki Valley were patrolled, and not just Oamaru and the surrounding area.

The council has yet to identify areas where freedom camping would be banned.
