A small number of protesters covering a range of issues turned out for the National Party's Mainland South Island conference in Oamaru at the weekend.

Four members of the Waitaki Citizens and Ratepayers' Association greeted delegates outside the Opera House on Saturday morning, urging them to encourage their members of Parliament to vote against the Reserves and Other Land Disposal Bill when it comes back to Parliament for a third and final reading.

The association opposes a clause in the Bill which lifts reserves status on land on Cape Wanbrow in Oamaru which the council wants to subdivide for the Forrester Heights subdivision.

They want the reserve status of the land preserved, stating the issue was "highly controversial" and the subdivision was "high risk" because of land instability.

Yesterday afternoon, about half a dozen protesters carried placards protesting issues including the use of 1080 poison, the emissions trading scheme, mining in national parks, dairy farm development, fresh water use and the Search and Surveillance Bill.
