Market on track for September 11 opening

About 50 information packs have been sent out to people interested in having stalls at the Oamaru Farmers Market, due to open in September.

From that, market manager Metka Conlan is hoping there will be at least 30 stalls for the first market day.

The deadline to apply for stall space was officially June 24, but Mrs Conlan is still accepting applications, with some information packs sent out only late last month.

A decision was made last year to reintroduce a weekly farmers market to Oamaru and a public meeting in February with Farmers Markets NZ chairman Chris Fortune created a lot of interest.

The plan is to have the market's first day on September 11, which will mean it is up and running for visitors to the Rugby World Cup.

The Waitaki Development Board supported the market by providing interim funding for the cost of national affiliation plus other start-up expenses.

It also helped identify and secure a site - beside the railway goods yard shed on the corner of Wansbeck and Tyne Sts in the historic precinct.

Mrs Conlan said stall holders interested in the market came from as far south as Palmerston and as far north as the Waitaki River and Valley.

However, it was planned to invite one vendor a week from outside North Otago who offered a unique product not available there.

It was also hoped to have a celebrity chef at the launch.

She expected stalls would be selling fresh produce, sauces and pickles, fresh meat and smallgoods, eggs and preserves.

The working group setting up the market meets every few weeks and would welcome comments and suggestions.

It is also appealing for an old cart or tractor that could be used to permanently decorate the site.
