Pupils at two Oamaru high schools will now have a chance to learn Mandarin.
As part of a programme run by the University of Canterbury's Confucius Institute, teacher Emma Qui will next week begin teaching Mandarin to pupils at St Kevin's College and Waitaki Boys' High School, and St Kevin's acting principal Kerry Ryan said everyone at the school was thrilled to be able to welcome Miss Qui.
''Staff and students at the College are delighted to welcome our new Mandarin teacher to St Kevin's this week.
''Miss Qui has quickly settled into the hostel ahead of classes beginning next week.''
The appointment of Miss Qui, who also hoped to teach community-based classes later in the year, was the result of a trip to China hosted by the Confucius Institute, in which the principals of both high schools took part.
