Oamaru North School's homework centre group of 35 children, led by Hana Halalele (right) on guitar, celebrates Tongan Language Week at the Oamaru Library yesterday.

The group meets on Mondays between 3pm and 5pm to get assistance with homework, but wanted to perform at the library and started practising its two songs two weeks ago.

The library this week is hosting five school groups as part of the week to showcase Tongan culture.

The Friendly Islands Playcentre came to Toddler Time yesterday for the performances by North School and St Kevin's College.

Youth librarian Fiona Kerr, who organised the events, said Waitaki had a large Tongan community, yet many people had little or no understanding of their culture,Highlighting Tongan culture during the week was one way for people to learn more.
