Naseby's ice luge is set to open at the end of May, following the installation of a new refrigeration system in the track's base.
New Zealand Olympic Luge Association president Geoff Balme said this week about three-quarters of the system's pipes had been placed and it was expected the rest would be laid in the next few weeks.
The pipes would then be connected to a refrigeration system already operating at the nearby Maniototo International Curling Rink, he said.
It was hoped the refrigeration system would provide greater security for the track's open season.
Last year, the luge's open days were restricted as snow and ice melted, and dependent on regular snow falls as well as cold nights when artificial snow could be pumped on to the track.
Mr Balme said planning was also under way to construct a 6m by 6m wooden hut at the top of the luge, where equipment could be stored, and shelter provided for race organisers and participants.
"We are about to submit an application to the Southern Victorian Trust to try to secure some funding for the hut.
"We hope it will look like a garden chalet, to complement the beloved garden area at the top of the track," he said.
Mr Balme hoped to get about $15,000 for the hut, but said plans would be adapted to whatever funding was secured.
He expected the luge to host at least four major competitions, a camp, and New Zealand Winter Games activities before the season ended late in August.
