A lonely leftie in traditional Kurow

Cafe owner, beekeeper, former natural history documentary maker.

By the time you add greenie to Kate White’s biography, you can see how she might be a bit of an anomaly in rural, conservative Kurow.

"I’ve tended to challenge a few issues around here," she laughs.

The local of 28 years has been heavily involved in Waitaki River issues, and she’s part of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

"The freshwater policy the Government has brought in, people don’t like it in the rural sector, but in this area we have been eased into it gently through Environment Canterbury’s rules," she says. "People don’t like it but it’s what we have to do."

She tends to vote for the Green Party, but is clearly a big fan of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

"What a great role model for young women. And she doesn’t play dirty politics."

She acknowledges, though, that it is hard to be a leftie in a National stronghold sometimes.

She laughs as she recalls how someone once voted for Labour in Cattle Creek, and a group of locals were questioning who the traitor could have been.

"Women round here vote how their husbands tell them to vote," she says.

"People vote on tradition in this area. They don’t vote on performance, they vote on tradition. It is true blue Nats around here."

She does have sympathy for departed National leader Todd Muller, though.

"I’m really impressed with him. That’s a big call 67 days out from an election.

"But they’re just in such disarray."

Fraternal greetings.,

Worried about wives voting as their husbands tell them.

Are true blues male hegemonic?

Nobody knows your vote in the secret ballot. Do those jokers watch the missus in the booth?

"Women round here vote how their husbands tell them to vote," she says.

Do you have any evidence to back up this outrageous claim? Or is this just another 'leftie' soundbite along with "Great role model" and "Doesn't play dirty politics"?

You've rather extended the context. I'm from rural, or provincial, NZ, and can assure you there was domestic conflict over political allegiance. Not to mention the Housekeeping wage.

You mention there 'was' conflict....I assume this was many years ago when a woman's place was considered to be 'in the home'?
Times have changed. Kate White needs to provide evidence that this still occurs, otherwise she runs the risk of being labelled as living in the past.

Get over yourself, Ms White. As if any self-respecting Kiwi women vote how our husbands tells us!

Typical of the Far Left, White can't help but push for division and strife between the sexes and attempt to play the female victim card.

She comes across as completely out of touch with reality.

Instead of using the article as a platform to support and market her area, she turned in a whinge-fest.

Ugh.
