Maheno, south of Oamaru in North Otago, had 126 residents in the 2018 census. A number of the town's streets are named after places in Tyne and Wear, England, such as Whickham, Felling, Heworth and Jarrow. A New Zealand hospital ship in World War 1, the SS Maheno, was named after the town.
