Light survey scrutinised

The Ahuriri Community Board wants to ensure the fairness of a survey of Ohau Village residents about lighting levels in the town.

The survey was proposed by the newly formed Lake Ohau Alpine Village Ratepayers and Residents Association after some residents felt street-lighting was too intense. The group has compiled a questionnaire, which was considered by the board this week.

Board chairman Craig Dawson said it wanted the Waitaki District Council to check the survey before it went out in case the questions were "not quite right", and could tend to skew the results.

Some residents were unhappy about what they believed was unnecessary light pollution while others believed a reduction in lighting would cause safety and security issues.

The survey will ask residents for their views.
