The library's 6000 books were recently returned to the new design library after being put into storage during the upgrade. Alcove workplaces, complete with USB plugs and IT equipment, have been added for users, including tourists.
Mr van Zijl said the only other South Island library that had undertaken a similar layout change was the Kaiapoi library in the Waimakariri District.
The Waihemo Centre and the Palmerston library were open, although it would be about a fortnight before installation of all the new furniture and equipment was completed.
