Levels ease but lakes still full

The Waitaki River is slowly falling almost a week after heavy rain brought major in-flows into the upper catchment hydro storage lakes.

At 3.30pm yesterday, the river was flowing at 1031cumecs at Kurow and was expected to be flowing at about 1000cumecs through the weekend.

Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo were still over-full yesterday while Lakes Benmore and Aviemore were below their maximum.

Lake Waitaki was about 1.65m above its maximum.

Meridian expected spilling to continue from Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki next week, reducing the release at the three other lower lakes.

However, that would depend on the weather.

Environment Canterbury still has a flood warning in place for the lower Waitaki River.
