From china teacups to old gumboots, there was something for everyone at the Kurow market day yesterday.

Hundreds of holidaymakers flocked to the annual market day, held in the Kurow Memorial Hall and on the adjacent grassed area.

There were plenty of stalls to browse, with items ranging from punnets of strawberries and plants to garden ornaments, teddy bears and jewellery.

There was a long queue of children waiting patiently to be transformed into a lion or a butterfly by Hakataramea Valley face-painter Margaretha Engels.

The main street of Kurow was bustling with activity, while the Hay family - made each year from large bales of hay - was a popular attraction for photographs.

Kurow is now gearing up for another big day on Saturday with the Kurow Jockey Club's annual race meeting at the Kurow racecourse.

The meeting always attracts a large crowd of holidaymakers, Waitaki Valley residents and racing enthusiasts.
