The future of the Kakanui camping ground is still uncertain after resource consents issues were not settled at an Environment Court hearing in Oamaru yesterday.
The issue of the camping ground, established by Allan Jones on the south side of the Kakanui River, has dragged on since the 1990s when he first applied for resource consent for the development and for a tavern.
The tavern never went ahead, but Mr Jones set up the camping ground, claiming he had existing use rights. The Waitaki District Council disagreed, and he was forced to seek resource consents or face closure.
Mr Jones applied for resource consents in 2004, which were granted, but were then subject to three appeals to the Environment Court. To date one appeal remains outstanding. No agreement has been reached with appellants L. and R. Hildemann.
Yesterday at an Environment Court prehearing conference in Oamaru, Mr Jones' counsel, Len Anderson, said the issue had been "long and complicated".
The Hildemanns' approach was that if they could not get agreement on the conditions, they would continue with the appeal.
Mr Anderson said conditions needed to be isolated and identified, or there may be a need for a full apeal hearing.
The appeals were adjourned to see if agreement could be reached.
