A new structure has been put in place by the Oamaru Licensing Trust which yesterday announced the appointment of joint general managers.

Cathy Maaka and Justin Ludlow take over from Kingsgate Brydone Hotel manager Carey Lister, who provided management under a contract the trust had with Millennium and Copthorne Hotels, which also ran the Brydone.

Trust chairman Ali Brosnan said as well as reducing the trust's management costs, the two new general managers would provide closer links with the community and its organisations.

The change is the third in about three years. Prior to Mr Lister taking over, management was provided under contract by the Ashburton Licensing Trust.

The new joint managers start immediately so there is a smooth transition when the contract with the hotel chain is relinquished on October 1, Mr Brosnan said.

Mrs Maaka will look after the Northstar operation she has been managing and Mr Ludlow will take on the Brydone management, also overseeing Sports Central Brew House and Liquorland.

They will combine to oversee the running of the trust as a whole.

Members of their teams will be advanced to more senior roles to help spread the management load, Mr Brosnan said.

Mrs Maaka has worked for the trust for the 10 years she has been in Oamaru, at Northside then Northstar when it opened. Previous to that she was involved in the hotel industry for 30 years.

Mr Ludlow came from Central Otago to Oamaru eight years ago, initially as manager at Oamaru New World for two years then with the trust, first at Liquorland then as manager of the Sports Central Brew House.

The trust's annual accounts are due out this week, but Mr Brosnan has signalled a ''pretty tough'' financial year.

That was why the trust was restructuring the way it operated, local management being reintroduced to reduce its overheads.
