Jesus movie filming to begin in April

The Wellington film-maker planning a major feature film at Lake Benmore and Duntroon says the project is still on, despite experiencing financial and distribution problems.

South Vineyard plans to start pre-production on the biblical epic Kingdom Come early next month and begin filming in April, about two months later than planned.

The delay was due to resolving financial issues and cementing a distribution deal for the film about the life of Christ, United States-based publicist Ernie Malik said yesterday.

"The company has also secured an investor who has agreed in principle to fund the film," he said.

Banks which would issue the line of credit were performing due diligence.

"We had hoped this would be completed by February 19, but the company now expects to have all the paper work in two weeks and funds to be available immediately thereafter," he said.

Meanwhile, the company was seeking bridging financing to pay outstanding debts.

"Once we have the completed documents and have the funds, we will issue details of our new start date, cast and studio," Mr Malik said.

Filming had been due to start after Waitangi weekend.

It is believed about $60 million had already been spent on the project.

Details of the film emerged last August in a resource consent application to the Waitaki District Council and Environment Canterbury to construct the sets at Falstone and Duntroon.
