Up to 20 or more stone carvers could come to Oamaru later this year for the two-yearly Oamaru Stone Symposium.
Invitations have been sent for the 10th symposium, being held from October 24 to November 7 at Oamaru Harbour's Friendly Bay.
Completed works will be displayed at the bay and possibly around Oamaru during the annual Victorian Heritage Celebrations.
The symposium has adopted the same theme, ''Alice in Wonderland'', as the Victorian celebrations.
A symposium organiser, Matt King, said stone carvers would be encouraged to incorporate the theme into their work.
''We hope to see some amazing, unique, creative and inspired takes on the works of [Alice in Wonderland author] Lewis Carroll, complementing our very special town at what should be a magical time.''
