Waitaki Community Gardens co-ordinator Annie Beattie said Food Revolution Day was intended to educate people about the benefits and value of food and natural produce. The community gardens, which holds regular free workshops to educate people on how to be self-sufficient was behind the concept.
''I really just wanted to stress the benefits of organic food. We want to blow the myth that eating organic is too expensive. If you have your own backyard garden you could feed a family for a year for just $5 to $10 a week.''
Mrs Beattie added that pupils from Oamaru North School had visited the gardens for the day to learn about food and had recorded a video message, which would be posted on the Food Revolution Facebook page, inviting Jamie Oliver to come to Oamaru.
''We want Jamie to come to Oamaru and experience the beautiful food and wine we have here. The children all know who he is. He's just inspirational.''
