A new incident at Totara School has prompted further action.

The Otago Daily Times understands an alleged attack at the North Otago school last month is being investigated.

Allegedly a junior pupil was attacked by a more senior pupil, resulting in a senior pupil intervening to bring the alleged attacker under control.

Commissioner Cleave Hay yesterday confirmed an incident was now under investigation.

He said the incident was late in term three.

"There was a playground incident at the school involving some students which was managed at the time by the school staff and the principal."

However, the ODT understands the school management did not inform the parent community of the incident.

Mr Hay did not directly respond to that allegation.

"As commissioner, I am presently reviewing the process with the principal," he said.

He also confirmed that no other external intervention on the alleged attack had been commissioned.

The latest incident is among a string of others which has apparently undermined community confidence in the school.

In June the ODT reported that a concerned parent group, who have now removed their children from the school, "feared for the safety of children at the school".

This was due to the alleged mismanagement of behavioural issues in pupils by the school’s principal.

By that stage the school was already under statutory management.

The board then resigned in June with Mr Hay, who had been the Limited Statutory Manager since March, appointed as commissioner.

Mr Hay confirmed at the opening of last term the school roll was 38, dropping by nine from term 2.

The school roll is now 35.
