"It was so ordinary - never in my wildest dreams did I think it would win a prize," Oamaru embroiderer Doreen Ormandy said of her kiwi icon winning the top prize at the Southern Regional Embroidery Exhibition.

She is pictured with her work, The Great New Zealand Pie Cart which won the premier Ivy Pollard award presented at the biennial exhibition held by embroidery guilds in Otago and Southland.

The exhibition, which started on Saturday and runs to June 1 in Oamaru's Customs House, attracted 117 entries, along with an additional 120 items from the Oamaru Embroiderers' Guild and an exhibition by guest Sue McLean.

Mrs Ormandy's eye-catching portrayal of a pie cart outside Carisbrook, with a sign offering a dozen oysters for 1/6 may have been ordinary to her, but its simplistic style was attractive to the judging panel.
