Fire crews battled a 3ha blaze on the outskirts of Oamaru yesterday.
Despite being deemed extinguished by the afternoon, a fire crew had to return to the scene in the early evening as hot spots started to show.
It was one of many fires across the region yesterday.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said the fire in Reservoir Rd, which started just before 10am, spread to the Glen Warren Reserve.
Fire crews from Oamaru, Weston, Gleanvy and Waitaki Rural attended.

Helicopters and a command unit from Dunedin were also called to the scene.
The fire was one of several burning in the South Island, buffeted by strong winds.
A Fenz spokeswoman said crews had the fire under control and were ‘‘dampening down’’ the area by about 12.30pm yesterday.
The fire was eventually put out by two helicopters and fire crews.
However, one crew had to return in the evening to put more water on hot spots that started to come up.
A reporter at the scene said the blaze was being buffeted by strong winds and had crossed Reservoir Rd and reached into a stretch of pine trees at the reserve.
The reserve borders the town of Oamaru.
