A century for a centennial - about 100 people are expected tonight and tomorrow tocelebrate the 100th birthday of the Studholme Hall, near Waimate.
The hall, still in use by the community, was mooted in 1911 as a King Edward V coronation project, attracting a subsidy of a pound for every pound raised.
The community raised about 250 and with the subsidy the hall was built.
Hall committee chairwoman Elizabeth Rollinson said the centenary of the hall was a major event for the community, particularly when manycommunity halls would not be that old.
The celebrations start tonight with a 1950-60-70s-theme dance, entertainment being provided by Hamilton Elvis impersonator Che Orton.
The hall was expected to be at its capacity with about 100people, mainly locals or thosewhose families had lived in the area.
Tomorrow at noon is a family picnic with a complimentary spit roast, speeches and the cutting of the centennial cake by the oldest resident at the celebrations, Ron Wallace (80).
