More happy feet than usual will be packed on to the public viewing platforms at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony from the start of next month, as construction of a new grandstand nears completion.

A second grandstand is being built opposite the Oamaru tourist attraction's main grandstand as part of an internally-funded $200,000 improvement programme aimed at improving the visitor experience.

Colony manager Jason Gaskill said although there had been a "few delays" in construction, the new platform, originally scheduled for completion at the end of March, should be finished by the end of this month.

Mr Gaskill said the grandstand would make room for an extra 60 spectators, but the main reason it was built was to give visitors a different viewpoint.

"We know, even this year, there have been a number of nights where we have exceeded capacity.

"The proximity of the stand will just give them a different perspective. We have had the demand for this stand for the last couple of years," he said.
