Gillies family to make decision on tenders

Tenders have closed for prime commercial and industrial land in central Oamaru, the last business link with the Gillies family which played a major role in the town's development from the 1920s.

The 13,665sq m site fronts Thames St and takes up about two-thirds of the block between Ribble and Dee Sts, except for a single building fronting Ribble St, belonging to another owner.

It was where the late George Gillies first started business as a car dealer, leading to a business empire in Oamaru and other places, including Lower Hutt.

The Gillies family put the site, which includes extensive business, retail and industrial buildings as well as vacant land, on the market last month.

Tenders closed on March 31.

It was offered as one parcel, but is divided into 17 titles, and has a rateable value of $2.538 million.

Bayleys agent handling the offering, Robin Hyndman, confirmed tenders had been received for the property, but would not say how many.

They had now been forwarded to the Gillies family for a decision.

While the property was on the market, there was interest from all round New Zealand, as well as good local interest.

Inquiries had also been received after tenders had closed.
