Objections to proposals for a new tavern in Oamaru's Victorian precinct have lessened, but some opposition remains after talks between interested parties last week.

Two submissions, which objected to an application from Oamaru company Cucina 1871 for an on-license for premises at 1 Tees St, were received by the Waitaki District Council last Tuesday and, although council regulatory services manager Steven May said talks between the applicant and submitters had ''gone well'', more talks would take place later this week.

Two group submissions had been received, including one from St Luke's Church.

However, St Luke's vicar, the Rev Tim Hurd, said his fears had now been ''allayed'' and he had withdrawn his objection to the licence application.

''We still hope that the current tenant, Annie's Victorian Tearooms, will be treated well, and that the considerable personal and community investment made there will be recognised.

''And we do certainly hope that whatever the venture at 1 Tees St, that it will add to the heritage and Victorian focus that is so much a part of Oamaru's distinctive appeal,'' he said.
