Musical Theatre Oamaru is getting ready for two big years.

This year, the society is staging The Addams Family musical at the Oamaru Opera House and, next year, celebrating its 60th anniversary, it will host the Otago Southland Theatre Awards and stage Evita.

Musical Theatre Oamaru president Dan Lewis said it was an exciting time to be involved in musical theatre locally.

Mr Lewis is passionate about The Addams Family.

''It's a funny show, it's a family show - it's a show about a family for the family - it's got all the elements and it's got some really, really great music and I think people will come away laughing and I think they'll want to come and see it a second time,'' Mr Lewis said.

Dunedin-based freelance stage show director Doug Kamo will return to Oamaru to direct The Addams Family musical.

Mr Kamo said he felt lucky to be directing a show in Oamaru again, after directing Oklahoma! for the society in 2008.

''I can't wait to spend some more time up there,'' he said.

The Addams Family musical had to be directed tightly.

To do that, he needed some ''great performers'' and he was looking forward to casting the show in June.

Mr Kamo will be joined by choreographer Emma Holloway and musical director Stephen Hinds.

Musical Theatre Oamaru has also announced it will be staging Evita at the Oamaru Opera House in 2016.

''We're looking at making it a real year of celebration for Oamaru Operatic/Musical Theatre Oamaru,'' Mr Lewis said.

''Evita will be the perfect opportunity for that - Duncan Whiting is coming back to direct that, and it's quite fitting because he's directed a lot of shows for the society over the years.''

Hosting the Otago Southland Theatre Awards in 2016 would be another ''huge'' opportunity for the society.

The third annual event will bring about 260 people to the town for a weekend in February.

''It gives us the chance to show off what Oamaru has,'' Mr Lewis said.

''We're not really big enough to host a national [musical theatre] conference.

''However, we can do something like this and, I think, do it really well.''

The society is also hoping to secure the rights for another hit musical in 2017.

A pre-audition evening for The Addams Family will be held next month, with auditions from June 5 to 7.
