Focusing on water

Water quality is now the focus for a community committee overseeing freshwater management in coastal North Otago and South Canterbury.

The Lower Waitaki-South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee, formed under the auspices of Environment Canterbury, is made up of both local body and community representatives.

The committee has finalised its Zone Implementation Programme for water management and its recommendations are being implemented.

Now the committee is focusing on water quantity and water quality limits for rivers and streams, including the lower Waitaki River.

The zone committee's focus is on building its understanding of the impacts of various water quality and quantity limits so it can make technically and socially informed recommendations.

The committee meets tomorrow in Waimate and at 3.30pm will host a public meeting for South Coastal Canterbury for people to discuss their ideas and concerns about local water quality and water use.
