'Flagship' unisex toilets could be red or green

Green or red? That was the main debate over a new unisex toilet block for the Oamaru Gardens at a Waitaki District Council meeting this week, with no questions about the estimated $118,000 to $128,000 cost of building it.

The new toilets will replace old public toilets in the gardens near the yard and headquarters building, which will be demolished at a cost of $10,000 to $12,000, which is not included in the estimate to build the new ones.

It is hoped to have the block opened by the end of this year.

The council's committee of the whole was told about the toilet plans, which fit with the district council's public toilet strategy.

The complex will be built with loan money.

Described as "a new set of flagship toilets", the block will have three unisex cubicles.

The design draws on the "red sheds" at Oamaru Harbour, using red corrugated iron on the exterior with a wooden veranda.

The block will be "a classy, simple economical building fitting with the location and scale of the environment", according to a report to the committee.

It will be built next to the car park and children's playground in Chelmer St.

Councillors were not happy the red iron would suit the gardens, instead suggesting a green colour.
