The Waitaki lakes' biggest fishing contest had almost 300 anglers out in between 60 and 70 boats and along the Lake Aviemore shoreline from Friday to yesterday.

They were angling for the prize of a $700 barbecue for the heaviest fish.

There were also prizes for the heaviest fish of two other species, prizes for children and spot prizes.

This year, 193 adults and 83 children entered.

Details of every fish landed in the contest, licensed by the Central South Island Fish and Game Council, including species, length, weight and sex was recorded.

The information will be used for fishery research.

The heaviest fish caught in the adults' section was a 4.89kg brown trout, landed by John Hardy, of Timaru.

A 1.044kg brown trout caught by Ben Williams was the heaviest fish landed in the children's section.

Other winners were: heaviest salmon, Reece Kiwara (Oamaru), 0.656kg; heaviest rainbow trout, Sam Frame (Dunedin), 1.536kg.

Children: heaviest salmon, Caleb Jopson (Oamaru), 0.574kg; heaviest rainbow trout, Jacob Beenster, 0.896kg.
