The $1.5 million capital upgrade of the Waitaki Aquatic Centre has started well for the Waitaki District Council, the first stage having been completed under budget.
Pool covers have been installed on the main and learners' pools at a cost of $30,000, $22,000 less than budget.
The learners' pool filter has been replaced at a cost of $59,683, under the budget of $73,000.
At present, a programme is being developed for the rest of the work, and the pool is expected to close in April for major components of the project.
The work is needed because the centre has been open for almost nine years.
The upgrade will reduce the operating costs of the aquatic centre, improving the efficiency of its plant and reducing heat losses.
It will also improve the environment for swimmers and staff.
That could save ratepayers up to $140,000 a year in operating the centre.
