A lakeside residential subdivision on the shore of Lake Aviemore that has been 16 years in the making is entering its final stage after a resource consent hearing before a Waitaki District Council hearings panel yesterday.
Waitaki District Council councillor Struan Munro, who owns the site, wants to develop the 17-lot subdivision on north-facing land overlooking the lake, about 3km west of the Aviemore dam, and has been going through a resource consents process since the early 1990s.
That culminated in the Environment Court in 2004 directing the subdivision be included as the "Lake Aviemore settlement zone" in the Waitaki district plan.
That was done, opening the way for the subdivision to proceed.
However, Mr Munro wanted to change the development plan for the subdivision by relocating a road which provided access to a new car park on the shores of the lake.
Because of that change, he needed to go back to the council for a non-complying land use resource consent, which was considered by a hearings panel of Crs Gary Kircher (chairman), Pam Spite and Peter Twiss.
After hearing the application, the panel reserved its decision.
The road and car park in the development plan were originally located on the east side of McRae Creek, but Mr Munro now proposed to have both on the west side of the creek, where it would be easier to construct.
The council's planning officer James White recommended consent for the subdivision be granted, although that is not binding on the hearings panel.
