Watch out for the Flying Banana.

Oamaru's fun-seeking Preston family is preparing for the trolley derby being held as part of this year's Victorian heritage celebrations.

The derby is being held on Saturday, November 21, with a new course down Wansbeck St.

Last year's inaugural event down Tyne St provided plenty of thrills - and a few spills - with Dunedin electrician Jaryd Grimwood blitzing the field.

Mr Grimwood lay on his stomach in his contraption to make it more aerodynamic, a feat Deane Preston described as "mad, but amazing".

The Preston family's interest in trolleys stems from when they were living in Levin, where a big trolley derby is held each year.

Mr Preston built a trolley for his daughters, Natalie (11) and Laura (9), "to have a bit of fun".

The Prestons, who own Oamaru Exhaust and Radiator, won the business class last year.

Competition was "hotting up" between businesses this year.

The Prestons planned to give $50 to the North Otago SPCA if anyone managed to beat them and were challenging other businesses to enter.

They were also building a cart to give to the SPCA's Junior Paws club.

There seemed to be a resurgence in trolley racing throughout the country.

It was good old-fashioned fun, Mr Preston said.

Scrutineering will be from 9am with racing beginning about 12.30pm.
