The grandstand at the North Otago Showgrounds in Oamaru got a facelift courtesy of Dulux yesterday.

The grandstand, which likely would not have been painted since it was built 102 years ago, was one of 20 historic or otherwise locally important buildings to be awarded an "extreme paint makeover" out of more than 500 applications nationwide.

Association secretary Barbara Watt was thrilled with the initiative, and hoped her team of 20 volunteers would have the third coat of paint on all the seats finished by mid-afternoon.

The prize was a boost ahead of the 150th North Otago A and P celebrations next year, which might have helped deliver the prize to Oamaru, she said.

The Dulux colour called Oamaru was too purple for the grandstand, so a creamy white shade called Maheno had been used instead, she said.

Dulux trade representative Brent Sinclair, of Dunedin, said at least four other projects had already been completed, including one at Millers Flat School and another at a marae in Blenheim.

"We like to do our bit for the community," he said.
