Emergency plan unveiling

Kurow residents next month will learn about a new plan that will help their community to better cope with emergencies caused by natural disasters.

The plan, which has been 12 months in preparation, has been put together by the Kurow Civil Defence Response Group, in conjunction with Waitaki District Council civil defence and local emergency services.

It will be unveiled on April 4 at 7.30pm at the Waitaki Valley School, and at least one representative from each family in the Kurow community is being urged to attend to learn about it and how it will work.

The council's emergency services manager, Chris Raine, said the plan would be presented by Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton to the Kurow group.

The group had looked at a wide range of suggestions and options put forward by the community for the plan, ranging from having people to go door-to-door in an emergency to check on people, to using the Kurow fire siren.

The plan identifies evacuation points and emergency shelters along with alternatives for those.
