A Dunedin angler's Anniversary Day weekend on the Waitaki River was full of drama, but no salmon.

Urologist Jerry Walton, a keen salmon angler, rescued a jet-boater on Sunday, then yesterday had to be rescued himself.

Both jet-boats had their mishaps on the same bend on a side-stream about 300m below the boat-launching ramp on the south side of the Waitaki River.

Mr Walton said yesterday it was a "difficult, tricky" stretch of water that had to be judged just right.

On Saturday, a jet-boat hit the bank at the bend, damaging the side and its jet unit.

The boat could only reverse, and Mr Walton towed it back to the ramp.

Yesterday, on the same bend, Mr Walton was returning to the ramp just after 3pm when he misjudged the turn and put his boat into willows on the bank.

The boat ended up on a 45-degree angle, flooding the rear.

Mr Walton scrambled out through the willows on to the bank.

One or two boats went past, but did not see him or his boat.

Using a cellphone, he contacted police, who called out a jet-boat to rescue Mr Walton.

By the time they arrived, three other boats had stopped to help.

Mr Walton was not injured in the crash, but received numerous scratches from trying to force his way through the growth on the bank.

Late yesterday afternoon, he contacted his insurance company.

He then tried to work out how to retrieve his boat.

And he did not catch any salmon at the weekend.
